PIASS-TUFS Joint Seminar on Resource Management and Development


On February 18 – 19, the Joint Seminar on Resource Management and Development was organized by PIASS and African Studies Center (ASC) of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) at the PIASS Huye campus. The seminar involved 26 researchers from Japan, Rwanda, Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Democratic Republic of the Congo who presented papers and 15 other participants from PIASS, University of Rwanda and various government institutions. At the conclusion of the seminar, participants of the seminar discussed the outline of the next seminar that is planned at University of Ghana in September, 2020 and future prospects of a joint research project.

As part of the joint seminar, the opening ceremony of the Global Japan Desk (GJD) was also held with the presence of Mr. Soichiro YAMADA, Executive Director of TUFS, and Prof. Jun MATSUKUMA, Vice President of TUFS, and Prof. Elisée MUSEMAKWELI, Vice Chancellor of  PIASS. The GJD shall have a range of functions which include:

  • Coordinating the joint education programs to be run by PIASS and TUFS
  • Facilitating seminars and other activities towards increased mutual understanding between Rwanda and Japan
  • Providing support for Japanese students from TUFS and other institutions studying at PIASS as well as PIASS students applying for an exchange student program at TUFS
  • Other functions mutually agreed upon between TUFS and PIASS
