1994 Genocide against Tutsi Commemoration at PIASS

Since 2011, PIASS organizes a genocide commemoration to remember staff and students who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda. This year, the commemoration took place on May 4th and 5th, 2019at PIASS.

PIASS Community in Remembrance Walk

PIASS community remembers
Rev. Dr. Faustin Rwagacuzi – Dean of Faculty of Theology in 1994 – and his family, and four students in Theology – Christophe Mudaheranwa, Javan Ngirimana, Obed Niyonshuti and Fidele Muhire. This year, more information was collected on two more people who were killed at PIASS: Jean Marie Vianney Rurangwa and Laban Rusagarara who were both evangelists of EPR (Eglise Presbytérienne au Rwanda), and were killed after having attended the Sunday English service at EPR Chapel of Butare, very near to PIASS.
This time, the commemoration was marked by the discovery of new information on the deaths of the four PIASS students and two additional people who were reported having been attacked and/or killed at PIASS. In the commemoration event, there were several requests to search for information on what really happened, who were the victims and who are responsible for those deaths. PIASS expressed a commitment to continue the search mainly through a commission that has been then working on that matter since one year.
The event was marked by the presence of PIASS management, staff and students; representatives of local government, governmental institutions and NGOs were also with PIASS community in that period of hardships when we remember members of our community who are victims of the genocide. The participants in the event listened to a presentation on the history of genocide ideology in Rwanda. There were also speeches from different leaders such as the Vice-Chancellor of PIASS, the Vice-Mayor of Huye District in charge of Economic Affairs and the representatives of AERG among other people. All speeches emphasized that remembering is a way to give value to the victims of the genocide and that there should be no other genocide ever again.
