We are pleased to announce availability of scholarships for 5 well-motivated and competent Rwandan students who would like to pursue the 3-year Honors Bachelor’s degree in Peace-Building and Development from October 2019 at our Huye campus (See the program description attached). Currently, students from Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, the DR Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan,  Nigeria, Malawi and Japan are studying in this Bachelor’s degree program whose main aim is to foster a regional network of “peace-builders” across national boundaries.

Dr Munyansanga Olivier Dean of Faculty of theology
Main goal of the conference is to examine and discuss the key factors which generate and fuel violent radicalization and extremism of youth from different religions and church denominations. Dr Djibril who is a cancerologist at CHUB Huye in presenting root causes of radicalization. He started by explaining that there is no universally accepted definition of radicalization. Therefore, radicalization can mean different things to different people. For him the main root cause of radicalization is ignorance. As Averroes the Muslim philosopher said “ignorance leads to fear. Fear leads to hatred. Hatred leads to violence”. Very often factors which lead to radicalization:
  • Not to be accepted
  • Lack of equal opportunities
  • Lack of integration
  • Rejection of social values
  • Lack of tolerance

Home – Grown Solutions. A legacy to generations in Africa
The nation building in post-genocide Rwanda [1994] has very much reposed on the Rwandan cultural practices, commonly known as home grown solutions.  The concept has given name to a volume launched on 19 July 2019, in the Kigali Public Library by a group of 23 scholars and researchers. Sponsored by the Protestant University of Rwanda [ PIASS] and published by Globethics.net, Geneva and Editions CLE, Yaoundé, under the direction of two Rwandan scholars, Professors Tharcisse Gatwa, Journalist and theologian and Deogratias Mbonyinkebe, anthropologist, the volume describes and analyses the nature and depth of the “home grown solutions”,  including umuganda, gacaca, abunzi, ubudehe, imihigo, girinka munyarwanda; agakiriro; the management of wounded memory in a post-genocide context; reconciliation and healing; reconstruction of the social fabric through family; language and culture as factors of social cohesion and sustainable development

The Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (PIASS) organizes its Scientific Week 2019 on the theme: “Educational Quality in Rwanda: Challenges and Opportunities”. The study is open to PIASS academic community and to external researchers and scholars. Papers of academic caliber should be no more than 6000 words, Times New Romans12, line spacing 1.5; bibliography included. The deadline for submitting abstracts is June 30th2019 whilst the submission of the papers is September 30th. The habitual PIASSannual Three Days Conference for the presentation of the findings is scheduled  in the first half of December 2019.

Workshop for new teaching staff members

Tuesday 29th January 2019, the Centre for Didactics and Research in Education (CEDRE) inducted all new PIASS teaching staff members. The focus of gathering was to help the new lecturers understand and own PIASS philosophy with regard to teaching, learning and assessment process. In her opening remarks, Prof. Penine UWIMBABAZI, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics (DVCA) reminded the participants quality of instruction, good learning climate and competence based assessment as key to the success in terms of providing society with knowledgeable, skillful graduate with necessary job ethics.Moreover, she introduced participants to the meaning, organization and teaching in modular system. The coordinator of CEDRE,Mr NIYIBIZIEmmanuel, discussed with the participants on quality teaching framework and lecturer’s responsibility, reflection on competence based teaching and creation of conducive learning and the role of complex task in linking theory and world of reality as well as competence development.
The dean of faculty of education, Prof.Dr.NKUNDABATWARE Innocent introduced the participant, in reflecting on quality assessment framework .For him; lecturers are invited to think again about  (a) Why do teachers assess?, (2) How is assessment important for both students and lecturers? And (3) How do lecturers ensure the link between questions, content and objectives? The Dean discouraged assessments that are limited to marks allocation instead of ducking the level of competences.
New teaching staff members appreciated the induction session especially the level of competences, role of complex tasks, meaning and teaching in modular system. At the end of the workshop, participants suggested more sessions of professional development for quality teaching in their career.

The colloquium intends to be a forum for interactions between the grassroots organizations working on moral and social rearmament of the survivors of the genocide against the Tutsi, academics, members of community organisations, and policy makers.
