Karongi Campus

PIASS Karongi Campus is an extension of Huye campus. It is located in Rubengera Sector, Karongi District – Western Province in Rwanda. It is fully operational after obtaining the official authorization from Higher Education Council of Rwanda early in April 2014 and Government approval in May 2014.

 

PIASS Karongi Campus is prepared to promote a greater understanding and transfer of knowledge and practical skills in social sciences, particularly in the domain of education and development studies. It will serve as a resource centre, to promote research, teaching and provide service to a growing number of people, those in the region eager to expand their training and those eager to begin their training.  .

The campus works as an answer to many residents of the western region of Rwanda who have been struggling to get academic teachings because of difficult accessibility to Higher Learning Institutions.

 

PIASS Karongi Campus offers a range of academic programmes in the field of education to enable in service teachers as well as young secondary school leavers who want to make the teaching profession their future career to have relevant knowledge and practical skills in the domain of Applied Pedagogy.

 

Programmes specifications

 

The Applied Pedagogy Department at Karongi Campus is divided into four teaching specializations including Business Studies with education, History with Education (minor subject: geography), Geography with Education (minor subject: mathematics) and Languages - Kinyarwanda with Education (minor subject: English). Programmes in applied pedagogy aim at teacher preparation in specific matter subjects and place great emphasis on the mastery of content knowledge. A high value is also placed on preparing students to become effective teachers in both primary and secondary schools. Programmes are designed in a such way that they provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to gain critical knowledge and skills needed to teach all children and are constantly done in the light of both new knowledge and new insights into the struggles faced by teachers and school administrators in today’s schools. They further effectively prepare students in professional skills like lesson planning, student discipline, education administration and psychology of learning. Class micro-teaching and internships are also provided to empower students with practical skills while they are still in classes.

 

Programme of Business Studies with Education

At the completion of this program, graduates are expected to be able to:

  • Exhibit a deep understanding of accounting, economics and entrepreneurship content and of methods for teaching Business related courses (accounting, economics and entrepreneurship)

  • Teach business course curriculum  at all levels of basic education for classroom teaching and for other forms of instruction

  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and educational media effectively to promote business courses learning

  • Interpret, implement and evaluate business related courses curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of school system

  • Plan and organize learning environment for business related courses

  • Demonstrate technical skills in managerial and financial functions in business organization

 

Programme of History with Education (minor subject Geography)

Graduates of this programme are expected to be able to:

  • Teach history curriculum at all levels of basic education for classroom teaching and for other forms of instruction and geography courses at lower levels of basic education.

  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and educational media effectively to promote history  and geography learning

  • Interpret, implement and evaluate history curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of school systems

  • Plan and organize learning environments for history and geography courses

  • Conduct action research in the field of history as well as history teaching

 

Programme of Geography with Education (minor subject Mathematics)

At the completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  • Exhibit a deep understanding of geography content and of methods for teaching geography and mathematics

  • Teach geography curriculum  at all levels of basic education for classroom teaching and for other forms of instruction and teach mathematics at lower levels of basic education

  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and educational media effectively to promote geography and mathematics learning

  • Interpret, implement and evaluate geography curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of school system

  • Plan and organize learning environment for geography and mathematics courses

 

Programme of Kinyarwanda with Education (minor subject English)

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • demonstrate a deep understanding of the content of the Kinyarwanda language and of methods for teaching Kinyarwanda

  • Teach Kinyarwanda curriculum at all levels of basic education for classroom teaching and for other forms of instruction

  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and educational media effectively to promote Kinyarwanda language learning

  • Interpret, implement and evaluate Kinyarwanda curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of school system

  • Plan and organize learning environment for Kinyarwanda and English courses

 

Programmes organization

All programmes are taught within five levels (four years). At the beginning of the program (Level I and Level II) students are prepared to teach at least 2 subjects in Rwandan lower secondary schools as well in other African countries. Micro-teachings and teaching practice are used at level II to enable students practising to acquire subject matters teaching methodology.

During the remaining three levels (3rd, 4th and 5th levels), teachings focus more on content knowledge and on practices in one subject of specialization: more attention is given to theories and exercises and professional practicum (organizing micro-teaching, seminars, study trips, and so on). More specifically, at Level V, students have an internship of 3 months and write and present a research paper (memoir) in her/his domain of study.

Programme Entry requirements

 
  • To be admitted to the first year of an undergraduate programme, it is necessary to have an Advanced General Certificate of Secondary Education with at least two principal passes permitting entry to higher education or a qualification or other evidence of ability to study in the programme which is considered equivalent.

  • Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient competence in English to study at the Higher Education level 1.

  • To be allowed to attend lectures or other teaching/learning activities or examinations or other assessments, students must be registered in the appropriate programme. Students must register individually at Registry Services at the beginning of each semester year before the beginning of teaching

Application procedure

Duly filled application forms should be submitted to the academic registrar’s office and it can be downloaded from www.piass.ac.rw or visit our campuses/registrar’s office.

Application should be accompanied by copies of relevant academic and other required documents as specified in PIASS admission policy.

On application stage a student shall present the following documents:

 

  • A copy of senior 4, senior 5 and senior 6 school transcripts
  • A copy of identity card or passport
  • Certified (Notarized) copies of the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education with TWO principal passes, or its equivalent
  • Two recent colored passport size photographs.
  • Bank slip showing the payment of application fee 20,000 Rwandan francs (not refundable)


 

Please note: Application for admission does note guarantee admission into the University for programme or course applied for, this will be subject to the fulfillment of all requirements and class size as approved by the PIASS Senate
